Gratitude.

ree

This Week’s topic for reflection is gratitude. Gratitude involves receiving something and being thankful. Ask what does this moment have to offer that you can be grateful for? If initially you don’t come up with anything, stay with the question. Perhaps look closer or more simply. For example the life sustaining air you breathe and the trees and plants that produce it for you. We offer back the CO2 they need to breathe to sustain their life also. Throughout the day pause for a minute to notice what has been given or is being given, appreciate it and see if you feel grateful. When we are sick or hurt it is hard to find gratitude in the situation. Ask “How can I look at my situation with gratitude instead of what is lacking? What can I learn from this? What do I need to learn from this? How is this challenge an opportunity?"

Gratitude is not about fixing or getting rid of difficulty and pain or finding an escape. Recently when Senkei was in the hospital she had a doctor who visibly showed his compassion for her pain and difficulty. He knew what she was going through and it hurt him too. This was more comforting to Senkei than anything else. When it was time for him to discharge her from the hospital to go home he asked, “Is there anything else I can do for you.” Seneki replied, “Come home with me.” Such a beautiful expression of gratitude.

Life is often difficult and painful and we feel many different ways about it. Gratitude is a positive feeling, a feeling that shows maturity, confidence and wisdom. It’s wonderful when we can feel grateful for our difficulties and hardships. It’s especially important to share our gratitude when others are generous with us.
