Grace.

This week’s topic for reflection is grace. Pope Francis died this morning. I heard a Cardinal on NPR say that grace was very important to Pope Francis and the idea of a second chance. Isn’t that a wonderful thing to offer the world? Grace and a second chance. The possibility of forgiveness. The opportunity to do better along with atonement. Forgiveness for you, forgiveness for me and forgiveness for us.

Recently I was listening to a recording of one of Maezumi Roshi’s talks and he said a translation of the term koan is to make the uneven even. There’s grace in this. Another way to see this is everything is different or uneven and also even or equal, not separate. Grace becomes easy and natural and a second chance obvious when differences are looked at as an opportunity not a problem.

Please take this week to reflect on the teaching of Pope Francis, his leadership and example. I look forward to hearing what you have to share this Sunday morning.

Please join us for morning Zoom zazen from 7:00 to 7:30 Tuesday and Thursday, in person zazen at the McNail Riley House Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 and Sunday morning Zoom zazen and discussion of the topic for reflection blog from 8:00 to 9:00 Pacific Time. Here’s the Zoom link:
