This weeks topic for reflection is equanimity. My dictionary defines equanimity as mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation. Let’s dive into this state of being, how to develop it and its source. Equanimity is like a spinning top. At its ideal speed it appears upright, alert, balanced and stable; effortlessly still. Please pause and relax into this state of being. If you can’t seem to be able to, notice what is holding you back, Just gently notice. When practicing equanimity it helps to get comfortable and still physically. You can’t rush this. Do the best you can. Give yourself a period of time when you can set your busy life aside. I find it helpful to rest into easy, gentle breathing. When you get distracted, notice and return to your breath without judging. This is simple but not necessarily easy. This meditation, zazen, is a good way to develop equanimity in body and mind. Allow equanimity. Spacious equanimity. When this isn’t possible because you’re upset, just notice what is happening. If this isn’t possible in the moment, reflect when you are able. Would it have been better if you hadn’t lost it?
From your personal experience, how does fear and anger effect equanimity? How does equanimity effect fear and anger? How do you see or define equanimity? Can you come from a place of equanimity and be passionate at the same time? In it’s pure state equanimity is selfless and clear, active, true nature. This moment is equanimity, equal in all ways.

I feel like when I am upset I often pushed to a place where I am reactive and not really in control. I am more like the spinning top when I can relax and practice breathing techniques and accept things for what they are. I can practice equanimity by being aware of this state, appreciating this, and actively working toward this state of being.
