A Quiet Mind.

A quiet mind is this week’s topic for reflection. Quiet doesn’t necessarily mean silent or empty. In contrast there is the mind racing forward with thoughts and reactions. This mind seems distracted or at least obsessed with options and judgements. There is very little space for openness and genuine curiosity. This kind of mind often needs to be in charge and dominate.

Another type of mind is the overly emotional one. I mean strong emotions that crowd everything else out or are overwhelming or dominating. I see emotions as ideas with a physical component. Of course emotions are a natural part of being human and bring aliveness into our experience. When they become so strong they seem to be in charge, they can be a problem.

A quiet mind is being present, spacious and clear. It’s a way of being, not a particular thing or something to have. This mind doesn’t need a location, label or identity. Here there is no need for strongly held beliefs or opinions. A quiet mind is simple, open and inclusive. Creativity and inspiration often comes from a quiet mind. It allows us to participate fully without self-consciousness. A quiet mind is not dependent on reasoning or thinking but sees and responds clearly and directly. A quiet mind is not lazy or apathetic. Without self imposed resistance it is effortless. The nature of mind is like this if we don’t add greed, hatred, ignorance and self-centeredness.

Please spend time this week cultivating a quiet mind. Meditate if you need to. Perhaps slow down a bit. When you find yourself “loosing it” use whatever method you have learned to return to being more present, relaxed and open. A quiet mind allows for a world of difference to be realized.
