Coming Home.

This week’s topic for reflection is coming home. Home is a place where we feel safe, comfortable, familiar and welcome.  Even dealing with difficult change, being at home this change seems easier to manage. We know who we are here and our place or role. To “Make yourself at home.” means be yourself and relax as if you own the place.

Some people are at home traveling around, meeting new people and discovering new ways to live. Their home seems to be everywhere. Perhaps they live in a boat sailing around the world or an RV driving from place to place. Another way is to make ones home in an active place like New York City. It could also be a simple quiet place in the country somewhere. Where do you feel at home?

I see people in the news where their home has been destroyed by war, natural disaster or there is a crisis due to loss of a loved one. They look lost and lack hope or certainty. This loss of home can create a terrible trauma that is hard to navigate and get through. Imagine how you would feel if you suddenly lost your  home. How do you help others feel at home?

I see two ways of increasing the feeling of being at home. One way is acquiring things that encourage or support comfort and familiarity while insulating oneself from the unfamiliar. The other way is to increase ones exposure to new people and places, widening what’s comfortable or familiar. Perhaps a combination of these is best. We find a sense of identity with our home. What does coming home mean to you?
